I want to write my experience regarding calling on the name of our Lord.
I came to the Lord in one of the denominations, but there no one saw that calling on the name of our Lord is so important. But the Lord worked in me, I sought Him. And after many years the Lord brought me to the place where calling on the name of our Lord was the primary necessity, like eating bread, drinking water, and breathing air.
I came to where the Lord wanted me to be. And we call on His name both in good circumstances and in difficult ones. This is our breathing, our food. And we will never grow tired of it, because the Lord is always fresh and always new in our experience.

I was born and raised in a city that had been considered a stronghold of faith since ancient times, a true center of spiritual worship. A Christian atmosphere permeated everything around here, and from my very early childhood my grandmother instilled in me a reverent respect for God. From her I adopted my first quiet prayers.
But when I turned ten, war came to our country. I did not see the battles themselves, but their heavy, gloomy trace stretched everywhere. Closed shops, empty counters, the constant lack of food, and the most terrible thing — coffins. Every day, for four or five years, I saw people being buried. In this dark period my grandmother gave me a Bible and asked me to read it.
It was then that a conscious, ardent turning to the Higher Power was born in me. Every evening I knelt down and prayed to God, sincerely believing that He heard me. I begged Him to preserve the lives of my relatives — my father, my cousins — so that they would not perish in this war. And for some reason, within me there always lived the desire that they too would turn to God and rely on Him in everything.
Years passed. The war ended, and I entered the university. But along with growing up came a crisis. My conscience began to torment me, doubts arose about whether I was living rightly. At some point I let in the thought: "What if there is no God? What if He doesn't exist?"
By the end of my studies I had reached an unbearable feeling of soul emptiness. I desperately searched for answers and pestered everyone around me with the same question: "What is the meaning of human life?"
I remember asking my professor about this. It had always seemed to me that, apart from dry science, there was nothing living or human in him. But he unexpectedly answered: "There are things that cannot be explained. There is probably a higher mind, someone above all of us. And most likely it is God." These words made me think seriously.
Soon after this conversation I met with my cousin. Knowing that he was a believer, I asked him to share his understanding of the meaning of life. And he began to explain to me — not with dry dogmas, but on the basis of the Bible — for what purpose God created man.
My brother spoke of the fact that God has a great plan, and that this plan is directly connected with me. He said: "God is Spirit, and you too have a spirit." I had guessed before that I had a spirit, but that these two spirits — God's and man's — were created in order to be joined into one, I heard for the first time. At the end of the conversation my brother added that one must turn to God personally, by name, and not just in the abstract.
That evening I left his house a completely different person. For the first time in my life I said these words aloud: "Lord Jesus. I heard today that You want to enter into me and live in me. Please do this. Lord Jesus, I want this."
At that very moment a miracle took place, of which it is spoken in the Gospel of John (1:12-13): "But as many as received Him, to them He gave the authority to become children of God, that is, to those who believe into His name, who were begotten not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God." That evening, when I called on His name, I was born again.
At that same second, the oppressive emptiness that had tormented me for years disappeared without a trace. I physically realized: another Person now lived within me.
Before this meeting, the main meaning of life for me had been friendship. There were eight of us faithful comrades, we were like brothers, but life turned out in such a way that our paths diverged. This was a painful loss. But that evening I understood that I had gained the Closest Friend, who would never betray me. A Friend who would be with me both in joy and in sorrow, who would always support me. Companions might go their separate ways home or scatter to other countries, but He is always with me.
I did not want to get on transport to go home. I walked on foot, afraid that the bustle and strangers would disturb this blessed presence, this quiet fellowship within. The feeling was as if I had finally met the Person I had been searching for all my twenty-two years. Outwardly, nothing had changed in my circumstances. But inwardly — I was absolutely satisfied. The emptiness no longer existed.
Then I made a decision: "Lord Jesus, from now on I will always call on You and live with You."
I finally knew the meaning of my life. Friends, to whom I had been so close, cannot satisfy a person. The education I received also cannot bring true satisfaction. The work, the career I had so strived to build — all this leaves us empty. Even the scientific work at the university, where they had been waiting three long years for me to come and do something useful for society and people — this too cannot satisfy the soul. A good family also cannot satisfy a person. The outer world, peace, or, on the contrary, war — all this likewise cannot satisfy us or give true meaning to our lives.
Our spirit is made in such a way that nothing in this world is able to fill this deep emptiness — only God Himself. He wants to fill us with Himself. That is why, to this day, in any circumstance and situation of life, I continue to do what saved me on that unforgettable evening — to call on His name. Lord Jesus.

I met the Lord Jesus in the fall of 1974, when I was fifteen — during what people called the Jesus Revolution, when the Spirit was moving across a whole generation in America.
I was raised Catholic but was a rebellious boy, interested only in parties, with no interest in the Lord. My mother, in a Bible study with other Catholic mothers, experienced the Lord breathing His Spirit into her — John 20:22. Her faith came alive, and out of that she signed me up for a youth retreat.
I went reluctantly. A room full of teenagers praying with raised hands made me want to leave. But a young man there, reserved like me, made me stay.
Near the end of the retreat, in another meeting, I stood in the back looking for the exit — until I saw him with his hands raised too. Something shifted. I asked the Lord: Is this real? No voice, but a quiet pressure: If you want to know Me, raise your hands.
The struggle lasted almost an hour. Nothing scares a fifteen-year-old more than looking foolish. But the pressure only grew, until I gave in — hands on my lap first, palms up, checking no one was watching. Then I raised them.
What followed was an explosion of regeneration. The Lord breathed Himself into me — John 20:22 — and He was no longer an idea but a Person, present and real. Joy, peace, repentance, His nearness, all at once.
For months I returned the only way I knew: slipping into an empty room, raising my hands, and He would fill me again. Then that sense of Him faded, and I didn't know how to get it back. I didn't yet know that fellowship with Him is maintained through confession (1 John 1:9).
At university I found a group of brothers — the whole basketball team — who knew the Lord, met together as a church, and knew their Bibles. I'd assumed what happened to me was Pentecost. One of them showed me it was John 20:22 instead — the Spirit breathed in as life, not power. Regeneration.
They also showed me something new: calling on the name of the Lord, out loud, simply — "Lord Jesus, Lord Jesus." I resisted; it seemed too elementary. But one evening another brother and I tried it, and within moments His presence was so strong I had to stop.
From that night everything shifted. I stopped searching for a method and found a Person. "Your name is like ointment poured forth" (Song of Songs 1:3) — to call on His name is to be filled with the Spirit. "No one can say, 'Jesus is Lord!' except in the Holy Spirit" (1 Corinthians 12:3). I believe that, and I practice it.
This is not vain repetition. It's opening one's whole being to a living Person, "a life-giving Spirit" (1 Corinthians 15:45), as near as the air, available to anyone who opens his mouth and calls.
This is how I met the Lord and this is what I've learned in the fifty years since: the door has never closed. It opens every time I call.
"Lord Jesus. Lord Jesus."
